20th June 09 – The host of this event, Singapore Athletic Association, tweaked the normal race format so that all athletes in the 100m ran twice, where the seeding of the second race will be according to the performance in the first race.

The Women’s 100m Race 1 Heat 1 consisted of Amanda Choo and Ann Siao Mei, both of Nanyang Technological University, Fiona Ng of Raffles Institution (College), Asmah Hanim and Ho New Fei of Wings Athletic Club and Chua Jia Rui of Nanyang Polytechnic came head to head. Amanda Choo of NTU dominated the race from start to finish, winning comfortably.

Maybe it was a sign of things to come, as all the athletes’ timings were not their usual standards. Amanda Choo’s winning time of 12.60s was not anywhere near her National Record of 12.12s set in 2007, nor was it close to her current form of 12.2-12.4s.

Wings AC was well represented in the Men’s 100m, with a total of 10 athletes. Amazingly, Wings sprinters claimed 7 of the top 8 timings, U.K. Shyam leading the way in 10.93s followed closely by Elfi Mustapa, Amiruddin Jamal, Gary Yeo, Abdul Hakeem, Cheng Wei and Kenneth Khoo. Shameer Ayub was the sole exception in the face of a Wings AC domination.

Some of these athletes that ran in the 100m race also competed in the Men’s 200m, the notable ones were Kenneth, Elfi and Lance Tan of Wings AC. One lap specialist Kenneth showed his endurance, powering to a convincing win, clocking 22.02s. Like Amanda, Kenneth’s timing was not impressive nor was it a show of his current form.

Wings were not lacking in the Field events, dominating in both the Men’s and Women’s Discus. James Wong (National Record Holder) – 51.19m, Scott Wong – 43.91m, Hor Yee – 41.74m claimed the top 3 spots. Wei De rounded up Wings representation coming in 5th. Lay Chi, a Wings athlete, was representing her school, Nanyang Polytechnic in the Women’s Discus. She won her flight comfortably, launching her discus over a distance of 48.47m. Her nearest and only competitor was nearly 15m behind.

The Women’s 100m Race 2 Heat 1 was interesting as Fiona of RI(C) who ran the 200m and 400m at the National Schools, threatened to upset the status quo of Amanda Choo and Ann Siao Mei, but the power and endurance of the 2 girls proved too strong for Fiona, however, she is still young and has not reach her full potential.

There was heartbreak in the Men’s 100m Race 2. Shyam, the leading qualifier felt something on his hamstring and pulled out before the race could begin. However, Wings AC were not to be denied total domination as Elfi – 10.86s, Amiruddin – 10.88s and Hakeem – 10.93s completed a 1-2-3 finish, all dipping under 11s and making an improvement on their previous timings.

Ronnie Cai rounded off a good day for Wings placing 2nd in the Men’s High Jump with a height of 2.00m.
